Sound Effects

Live noise-makers, recorded options, and exactly when to use them. Simple tools that make a big difference.

Sound effects don't need to be elaborate. The best ones are live — a real object in someone's hands, making a real sound in the room. Children respond to that immediacy in a way a recording can't quite match.

That said, recorded options are listed for every effect below, for situations where a live noise-maker isn't available. Each script also notes exactly where in the play each effect lands.

Scene changes

Live option

A set of small chimes or a triangle — one gentle strike signals a new scene.

Simple and universal. Any chime with a clear tone works. Available at most music stores or online.

Thunder & storms

Live option

A thunder tube — hold the handle and shake gently. The spring inside creates a deep, rolling rumble.

The Time Machine

Live option

A slide whistle — one slow descending slide as the machine activates, one ascending as it returns.

Used in Hidden Treasure (#49) and The Inner Circle (#58). The prop itself is a cardboard box covered in crinkled foil with 'TIME MACHINE' written on it — lowered from above on a string as the whistle plays.
